Voter Information
Registration
Voting is an integral part of democracy. Without elections and the opportunity for the individual to be heard, democracy would hardly be possible. But before you can cast your ballot, you must first register to vote!
To vote in Orange County, you must be:
- A U.S. Citizen
- A Resident of North Carolina and this county for 30 days before the election
- At least 18 years old on or before the next election
- Not registered and not voting in any other county or state
- If convicted of a felony, your rights of citizenship have been restored
- If you move out of your precinct, but remain within Orange County, you should notify the board office in writing of your new address.
If you do not know if you are registered to vote in Orange County, you can find out by visiting here, where you will find a search engine that will show your voter registration status. This is also useful for finding your precinct and polling place, where you’ll go to actually place your vote.
If you aren’t already registered, you will want to register either one of two ways. If you have something to do at the DMV, like renew a driver’s license, you can register there.
Otherwise, you will have to get a voter registration form and mail it in. At this time, Orange County does not support voter registration online. However, you can download the voter registration form (in .pdf form) here.
Or, you can pick up a registration form at any of several locations nearby:
- Board of Elections Office - 110 East King St., Hillsborough
- Carrboro Town Hall - W. Main St. Carrboro
- Chapel Hill Town Hall - North Columbia Street, Chapel Hill
- Chapel Hill Public Library - Library Drive, Chapel Hill
- Davis Library, UNC-CH Campus
- Orange County Public Library - 300 W. Tryon Street, Hillsborough
- McDougle School Library, Old Fayetteville Rd., Carrboro
Once you’ve filled out your form, you will want to mail it in to the Orange County Board of Elections at the following address:
Orange County Board of Elections
P.O. Box 220
Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
Make sure you do this at least a month or about 25 days before the election in which you wish to vote. Otherwise, it won’t count and you cannot vote.

Casting your vote
You can use the NC voter search engine to find what precinct you live in, and where you will go to cast your vote. It provides information as to what municipal election you will participate in, and information on state elections as well. You may also find a map to your polling place.
