Newcomer Mia Burroughs and three incumbents were elected to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education on Tuesday.

Board Chair Jamezetta Bedford, Mike Kelley and Annetta Streater kept their seats on the board.
Burrroughs garnered the highest number of votes — about 21.7 percent. Candidate Gary Wallach came in fifth place, trailing Kelley by just over 1 percent with 17.3 percent of the vote.

Longtime board member Liz Carter did not run for re-election.

Burroughs said she was extremely grateful to her supporters and felt “totally exhilarated and a little numb.”
“At this point, I have to change gears,” she said. “I need to spend some time learning how to be a good board member.”
Bedford said she looked forward to continuing the board’s work on Professional Learning Communities and improving district math scores.

At an election forum at Carol Woods Retirement Community on Tuesday, school board candidates grappled with issues slightly different from the usual fodder.

Candidates heard questions about military recruitment in schools, Junior ROTC programs, dropout rates and No Child Left Behind mandates.

Incumbents Jamezetta Bedford, Mike Kelley and Annetta Streater are running for re-election, challenged by newcomers Mia Burroughs and Gary Wallach. Four seats on the board are available.

The school district is required to allow military recruiters into the high schools because it receives federal funding. However, parents can fill out a form that prevents students from being contacted by the recruiters.

Candidates had different opinions on in-school recruitment.

Minority student achievement and budget issues were recurring topics of discussion among Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education candidates at a forum Tuesday night. The forum was co-sponsored by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro PTA Council and the League of Women Voters.

Incumbents Jamezetta Bedford, Mike Kelley and Annetta Streater are running for re-election, challenged by newcomers Mia Burroughs and Gary Wallach. Four seats on the board are available.

Candidates were asked about the budget process, gifted education, school safety, the minority achievement gap and more. They agreed on several issues — all five were opposed to a merger with the Orange County Schools district, for example.

Candidates did, however offer different ideas about how to improve the school budget process — a process most involved agree is each year a difficult one.
