Election board settles on post office for early-voting site

Thursday, August 9th, 2007 |

After searching for an alternative site to the Morehead Planetarium that’s near campus and downtown Chapel Hill, the Orange County Board of Elections decided on Tuesday night to set up an early-voting center in the lobby of the Franklin Street Post Office.

Barry Garner, the county’s elections director, said the board reviewed several sites, including the Student Union and the Seymour Senior Center on Homestead Road before opting for the post office. The new early-voting site will be in the lobby to the right of the entrance, he said.

Campus needs an early-voting site

The Orange County Board of Elections may present UNC students with two alternatives for early voting in this fall’s municipal elections: Hitch a ride to the closest poll, or simply don’t vote.

In an email last Monday, Orange County elections director Barry Garner informed UNC-Chapel Hill administrators that he had decided to recommend that the board move the location of their early-voting polling site from the traditional on-campus site to the Seymour Senior Center off Homestead Road.

In past years, the on-campus polling site has been located at Morehead Planetarium, which will not be available this year due to the showing of a special exhibit.

The UNC voting location has been Orange County’s most popular early-voting site for UNC faculty and staff as well as local community members who live and work nearby. According to the News & Observer, nearly 2,800 people voted early for municipal elections at the planetarium last year. They represented more than 40 percent of the early ballots cast and 8 percent of the total ballots cast in the 2006 general election.

Penny Rich files in Chapel Hill Town Council race

Thursday, July 19th, 2007 |

Penny Rich, who has served six years on the OWASA board among other things, has announced she’s running for council.

From her release:

I am announcing today my candidacy for a seat on the Chapel Hill Town Council.

The privilege of serving the people of Chapel Hill will enable me to bring this city back to its fundamental principles of a government that is progressive, accessible and will represent the people’s will.

My six-year term on the OWASA Board of Directors has enlightened me on the importance of being diligent about our water supply. I will tackle the broader issues with the same tenacity I exhibited at OWASA, and achieve the desired objectives for this government and the people.

Many Chapel Hill residents come from other parts of the country to enjoy the charm and beauty of this city. Our goals should embrace healthy and sustainable growth, without forgoing the special character that makes Chapel Hill a unique place to live and raise our children.

Chapel Hill should have a thriving downtown, with prosperous small establishments and adequate parking. It should encompass the business center of our town. The vision should include beautiful public areas alongside bustling cafes, restaurants, bookstores, theatres and markets. One of my priorities as councilwoman is to make the downtown area an attractive location, and focus on promoting the patronage of our businesses.

Sally Green has announced on her Web site she’s running for re-election to the Chapel Hill Town Council.

From her statement:

Welcome! I’m seeking reelection to a second term on the Chapel Hill
Town Council
in November. Your vote and your continued support are
crucial to my campaign to continue the productive work that we as a
community have been engaged in over the past four years.

When I ran for office in 2003, my principal goals were to address the
urgent issue of housing affordability in Chapel Hill, to extend the Council’s
initiatives in neighborhood and historic preservation, to further the town’s
environmental preservation policies, and to begin an honest and
constructive conversation about the impact of homelessness on our
community. Four years later, the Council has accomplished the following: (more…)
