Obama to Carrboro?

Nothing’s confirmed, but town is readying for a major rally and rock show May 2 at Town Commons

By Kirk Ross

No official confirmation yet, but Carrboro officials are planning for one of the largest crowds in town history after the board of aldermen greenlighted a request by the Barack Obama campaign to hold a major event Friday afternoon, May 2 at the Town Commons.

Town Manager Steve Stewart said the event, a concert and rally for the Illinois senator and leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, would be unprecedented since it will happen during business hours, while typically large events at Town Commons are held on weekends. The Obama campaign asked for the time slot, he said, because they want to be able to encourage attendees to take advantage of the early-voting site nearby at Town Hall.

Lydia Lavelle (left) shares a laugh with her partner, Alicia Stemper. Lavelle was elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen, receiving the most votes of any candidate

Lydia Lavelle, a first-time officeholder and resident of the newly annexed northern portion of Carrboro, gathered the most votes in the election for the Carrboro Board of Aldermen.

Lavelle took 1,656 votes, or roughly 25 percent of the vote, to top the list of alderman candidates. She was followed by two-term incumbent Joal Hall Broun and Alderman Dan Coleman, who was appointed to the board in 2006 and was running for election for the first time. Broun received 1,457 votes, or 22 percent, and Coleman won 1,305 votes — 20 percent.

The winners were followed by Katrina Ryan, running for the second time, with 927 votes, for 14 percent of the vote, and planning board member Sharon Cook, who received 861 votes, or 13 percent.
Frank Abernethy received 256 votes, or 4 percent.

In the mayor’s race, 74 percent opted to return incumbent Mark Chilton, who won a total of 1,709 votes. Challenger Brian Voyce received 426 votes, or 18 percent, and Chuck Morton received 158 votes, for 7 percent.

What do you hope to accomplish if elected?

I want to help make Carrboro a more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable community by addressing the issues listed in response to the next question.

What are the top two or three critical issues facing Carrboro?

1. Diversify Carrboro’s tax base through careful downtown re-development and revisions to the Northern Small Area Plan.

2. Make Carrboro the most pedestrian and bicycle friendly town in North Carolina by completing bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Estes Drive Extension and Smith Level Road and creating a Bolin Creek Greenway and a Morgan Creek Greenway.

3. Complete revisions to the Northern Small Area Plan with an emphasis on diverse housing, economic development, open space preservation, stream protection and farmland conservation.

What have you learned about our town in the campaign?

This is my third time running for office in Carrboro in the last four years. That means that I have walked along almost every street in Carrboro three times and I have knocked on thousands and thousands of doors. I have had the chance to speak with a huge number of residents and collectively they seem to agree on three points: 1) We need to limit Carrboro’s property taxes. 2) We need to make Carrboro a more walkable community. And 3) we live in the greatest town in North Carolina.
