Sally Green has announced on her Web site she’s running for re-election to the Chapel Hill Town Council.
From her statement:
Welcome! I’m seeking reelection to a second term on the Chapel Hill
Town Council in November. Your vote and your continued support are
crucial to my campaign to continue the productive work that we as a
community have been engaged in over the past four years. When I ran for office in 2003, my principal goals were to address the
urgent issue of housing affordability in Chapel Hill, to extend the Council’s
initiatives in neighborhood and historic preservation, to further the town’s
environmental preservation policies, and to begin an honest and
constructive conversation about the impact of homelessness on our
community. Four years later, the Council has accomplished the following:Affordable housing. I chaired a community-wide task force that has led to
a proposal for an inclusionary zoning ordinance. The ordinance, which
would require affordable housing units in most developments, will be ready
for public hearings and potential enactment this fall.Neighborhood and historic preservation. As planning board liaison, I was
actively involved in the Council’s creation of four new neighborhood
conservation districts. Additionally, on my initiative, the Town has given a
permanent historic preservation easement to Preservation North Carolina
for our 1960s-era public library building, current home of the Chapel Hill
Museum.Environmental preservation. As one of three members of a Council committee
on open space conservation, I worked to put 92 acres along Morgan Creek
under permanent conservation easement to the North Carolina Botanical
Garden Foundation. In addition, I have been working toward strengthening
our tree protection ordinances.Homelessness. The community conversation on homelessness that we
held in November 2004 has evolved into Orange County’s Ten-Year Plan to
End Chronic Homelessness. Having participated on the steering committee
and the staff-level work group from the beginning, I now serve on the executive
team that will hire the plan’s coordinator and direct the work.Through my work on these and other initiatives, I continue to be impressed
with the level of commitment that the citizens of Chapel Hill consistently bring
to the project of keeping our town vibrant, livable, and inclusive. The work,
however, is not done.I want to be involved in bringing our new affordable housing policies to fruition
and seeing them smoothly implemented. I have further ideas for neighborhood
preservation, including specific ways to discourage teardowns. Our open
space conservation committee continues to look at potential property for
permanent conservation. Now that we have implemented some strengthened
tree protection rules, I want to see us through to the proposed second phase.
I want to work to see a decrease in the numbers of homeless persons and
an increase in the services available to them. In many other ways, I am eager
to be a part of the continued thoughtful and responsible development of
Chapel Hill. For twenty years now, I have called Chapel Hill home. As many of you know
at first hand, this is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. It
would be a great honor to serve the community for another four years.Thank you for visiting this web site. If you are interested in contributing in any
