A man in motion now at rest

Author, newspaper editor and self-proclaimed “notorious hometown ne’er do well” Roland Giduz was remembered fondly by friends and family on one of those clear, sunny Chapel Hill afternoons he cherished so much.

Giduz died Saturday after a long illness. He was 83.

What started as a gray Monday turned into a glorious, warm afternoon – the kind of day that typically would lure Giduz and his wife, Helen, out of the house for a stroll down Franklin Street.
During the service, attended by about 400 people, many references were made to Giduz’s signature greeting, “Ain’t you glad!,” his love of singing and his fondess for the ukulele, which was given a place of honor at the altar for the service. More »

Big snow shuts down services, schools

As two inches of snow blanketed Carrboro and Chapel Hill on Tuesday, schools, offices and businesses closed and local officials urged residents to stay off the roads.

The snow started late Monday night and continued until around lunchtime Tuesday, creating a playground for those with sleds but treacherous conditions for drivers on the roads. More »

Aquatic center opens

The Homestead Aquatic Center will open on Saturday. Area swimmers are invited to enjoy the new facility, run by the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department.
The center is located in the northwest corner of the 40-acre Homestead Park at 300 Northern Park Drive off Homestead Road in Chapel Hill. The center has two pools, locker rooms, bleachers, a reception area, offices and public art.
