New suds shop rises on Main Street

Over the past few years, beer drinkers in North Carolina have seen their options expand on local taps and grocery store shelves, as breweries from all over the world began distributing their beer in the Tar Heel state.

Until several years ago, the borders were closed to many breweries’ beers because of a law that banned beer with 6 percent alcohol by volume or higher. After groups like Pop the Cap lobbied for beverage options other than Bud, Miller and the like, state lawmakers lifted the ban in 2005.

This summer, rising freshmen from schools across Orange County are taking advantage of a new approach to learning math and science, building solar cars and constructing model bridges as part of the Communities in Schools Green Awakening Project.

For the project, Communities in Schools staff worked with Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County school staff to identify rising high school freshmen who traditionally do not enter advanced math and science classes.

Gullywashers have crews cleaning up trees and debris

A series of heavy weekend thunderstorms downed trees and clogged stormwater systems throughout southern Orange County.

David Poythress, Carrboro’s streets superintendent, said public works crews for the town have been cleaning sand, gravel and plenty of sticks and other debris out of storm drains and culverts.

News Brief: Buckhorn vote delayed

The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to postpone a decision regarding the special-use permit application for Buckhorn Village until September 2.

The Orange County Planning Board had requested more time to make a recommendation regarding the proposed 1.1 million square foot development off Buckhorn Road, near I-85/I-40 in the western part of Orange County. Developers and county officials have said the development could bring in sales tax revenue and curb property tax increases.

The SEANC convention, held in Greenville, included nearly 700 delegates representing about 55,000 members of the SEANC, and about 80 percent voted to join.

It was standing room only in the misting tent — a welcome place for young and old who made the trek to the Town Commons for the Carrboro Fourth of July Celebration.

Most arrived en masse in one of the Triangle’s shortest but well-attended parades. Hundreds wheeled and walked from Weaver Street Market to the commons in Carrboro’s annual and colorful plunge into summer. More »
