Even the pouring rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the women’s Carrboro High School soccer team on a recent game night.

Carrboro High School took on the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics on March 19 in a game riddled with rain, wind and power outages. But the team stayed strong, passing accurately and communicating clearly — eventually ending the game with a 1-1 tie in overtime. The Carrboro soccer squad appeared to be anything but a new team.

By the end of next year, Carrboro residents who prefer to putt with a disc won’t have to venture out of town to get their golf fix.
The Carrboro Parks Project, a nonprofit that works to improve parks and open spaces in town, plans to raise money to install a disc golf course in Anderson Park off N.C. Hwy. 54.

“It’s a chill sport, but it has a competitive edge too,” said Krista Moll, a Raleigh resident who travels to UNC’s Outdoor Education Center, the disc golf course closest to Carrboro.

It seems likely that only on this past Sunday, at NC State’s home arena, the RBC Center, could one have witnessed such a scene. There, in plain view, a sea of light blue-clad fans screamed their heads off for a team from North Carolina clad in State red uniforms, as that team came back from 17 points down to upset a highly ranked opponent, the Georgetown Hoyas — those very same Hoyas who happened to have bounced UNC from the post-season twice in the past six seasons.

Other than 1,500 or so Georgetown fans who had scored tickets, every soul in the Wolfpack’s lair seemed to get caught up in Davidson Wildcat hysteria. (Well, there was that one sad-looking guy in the Duke shirt who wandered the aisles and really didn’t look consolable.)

Bravo, Heels!

Bravo, Heels!

Following Tywon Lawson’s severe ankle injury early in February, there were a lot more questions about this UNC basketball team than answers. Sure, the Tar Heels still possessed the talent — as they very often do — to compete against top opposition on any given night.

But when North Carolina looked in the mirror after losing to Duke in Chapel Hill on Feb. 6, all the Tar Heels could say to themselves was, “We gotta do better than this.” If what Carolina sought from that moment was the best opportunity to attain our goals, to meet its expectations and to fulfill its - and our — hopes, the Tar Heels would need to figure out ways to improve their defense, sharpen their half-court offense and solidify their overall focus.
