Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will hold a meeting to organize a chapter of the Special Education Parent Teachers Association in Chapel Hill on May 14 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Public Library on Estes Drive.
At the meeting, members will elect officers, enroll charter members, approve bylaws and pay $10 membership dues. In addition, members will have the opportunity to provide input into chapter development and future programming.

Ten students from Phillips Middle School competed in the State Math Finals at UNC-Greensboro on May 1.
Students who placed in the contest include: Alex Kelly, ninth place in Algebra I; Bernie Almadoss, 13th in Algebra I; Sheila Deng, fifth in Geometry; Yu Wang, eighth in Geometry; Alice Huang, 20th in geometry; William Holub-Moorman, 16th in Algebra II; and Avi Aggarwal, 17th in Algebra II.

Claire Royals Wilson, a fifth grader at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School, recently received the National Award of Excellence from the PTA’s National Reflections Program.
For the contest, Claire submitted a piece entitled “One Smile” in the intermediate division of the literature category.

The first People United 5K will be held at Culbreth Middle School on May 17 at 8 a.m.
The race promotes awareness of nonviolence and peaceful interactions within the community and raises money for the Family Violence Prevention Center.

The Chapel Hill High School Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Combos will perform concerts this month in the Hanes Theater at Chapel Hill High.
The Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. on May 13. The concert will feature a new piece performed with visiting eighth-grade band students from McDougle and Smith middle schools.

Students from Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill high schools placed in contests at the North Carolina State Leadership Conference in Greensboro, April 24-26.
Chapel Hill High School senior Audrey Vaught finished second in the state in Impromptu Speaking, while Chapel Hill High junior Nick Ludlow finished second in Business Procedures. Both will represent North Carolina at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Georgia in late June.

The Orange/Chatham Chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina and the North Carolina Family to Family Health Information Center of the Exceptional Children’s Assistance Center will hold a free parent training tonight (Thursday) from 6 to 8:30 at Extraordinary Ventures on South Elliott Road.
The training, called Public Health Programs 1, will feature discussion of public programs, including CAP waivers, Medicaid, SSI, EPSDT, Medicare and NC Health Choice.

“Get pumped CHS juniors because the first ever Carrboro High School prom is here! Get ready to turn the lights down and turn the music up,” read weekly announcements at Carrboro High School.
On May 10, Carrboro High School will hold its first prom, from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Carrboro Century Center.
The student body has been working hard all year to put on this event.

Morris Grove Elementary School Principal Amy Rickard recently announced that the school’s mascot will be the gecko and the school’s colors will be navy blue and green.
Morris Grove will open on the corner of Dromoland and Eubanks roads in August. More than 150 students who will attend the school voted on the mascot and colors.

Chapel Hill High School student Amber Bivins served as a spokesperson for the National Students Against Violence Everywhere Youth Advisory Board at the group’s national conference in Raleigh on April 4. The conference focused on Internet safety, gang prevention, bullying prevention and dating violence.

The Phillips Middle Geometry and Algebra II Math Teams finished first in the Regional Mathematics Competition at UNC-Pembroke on March 13.
Ten students placed individually and will participate in the state competition on May 10. In algebra I, Alex Kelly placed first and Bernie Amaldoss placed seventh. Students Yu Wang, Daniel Liu, Sheila Deng, Alice Huang and Shreya Das finished first through fifth in geometry, respectively.
In algebra II, Nicholas Tae placed second, Avi Aggarwal placed third and William Holub-Moorman placed fourth.

Several Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools students recently competed in the United Nations Contest, sponsored by the West Triangle Chapter of the United Nations Association.
First place went to a team from East Chapel Hill High School for their project entitled “United Nations Peace Keeping Reform.” Team members include Jason Elangbam, Jun Hong, Alexander Loyal and Joshua Loyal.
Second place went to Jiyoon Lee of Chapel Hill High School for her project “Silent Tragedy.”

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools recently launched a safety website.
The site provides information regarding the district’s pest-management notifications, the asbestos removal program, chemical hygiene, air quality and other safety issues.

The Phillips Middle School Battle of the Books team finished second in the Piedmont area regional tournament on April 18 at Randolph Community College in Asheboro.
Fourteen area teams competed in the tournament. The team from Winston-Salem/Forsyth finished 10 points ahead of the Phillips team.
