• You’d think we’d at least get the name of the mascot of Carrboro High School right. Most times, we do. Last week, we didn’t. Go, Jaguars.
• The fellow helping Scotty Mclean in a front-page photo of the capture of the Century Center bees is Leo Gaev.

A story last week on the Board of Aldermen meeting should have noted that planning board members serve three-year terms and that the term for a seat vacated when Lydia Lavelle was elected to the Board of Aldermen expires in January 2009.

Our story last week incorrectly reported the stormwater mitigation cost estimate for a potential town-leased parking lot behind the KFC on East Main Street. The cost is estimated to be between $100,000 and $200,000.

Contrary to what was reported in last week’s story about Carrboro Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, the building the doctors now occupy has central heat and air conditioning. We regret the error.

Occasionally I make a mistake that’s just breathtaking. I knew the chances were good that someone would get left out of the advertiser appreciation ad we ran last week, but through the magic of cut and (not) paste I managed to leave out one of our oldest and best advertisers.

For The Record: A note of thanks

Nov 21, 2007 | In-House | 0 Comments »

It was around this time last year that we made a commitment to begin publication of The Carrboro Citizen. And though it took until spring to gear up and actually start printing, this is a good time to thank the many people who have kept us going.

To start, on the back page of this publication you’ll find a heartfelt thank you to the many businesses, organizations and individuals who have helped sustain this paper by placing advertisements with our enterprise. Since this newspaper and its online counterpart are distributed free of charge — and since our approach to home delivery is as a courtesy, and the costs are roughly equal to what we charge — our sole source of support is through advertising.

Thanks to Red Cross
On Friday evening, the Red Cross had a booth at Last Friday in Hillsborough. They smiled and offered disaster readiness information as they chatted with folks enjoying the cool fall weather and free entertainment. About 30 hours later, I watched as some of the same faces were assisting victims of the Highland Hills Apartment fire in Carrboro. In the destruction, individuals considered themselves lucky to have escaped with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

Pray that you never need the Red Cross and thank those who volunteer when you do.

What they’re saying about Cat

Sep 20, 2007 | In-House | 0 Comments »

Editor’s note: Jock Lauterer’s recent column about George “Cat Baby” Cannada garnered quite a response. The article was passed around via email to locals and ex-pats alike. Following are some of the responses from here and points elsewhere.

 Jim Greenlee
Appreciated so much the Cat-Baby article! As a member of Carrboro Baptist Church in those days, I remember Cat being the unofficial “greeter” on Sunday mornings. He would stand holding the door open and with a big cigar in his mouth, would welcome all to church! He had Sunday School Perfect Attendance pins hanging from his suit lapel indicating decades of perfect attendance. I once went to his house on Center Street to teach him the Sunday School lesson when he was ill, so he could keep his streak going. I also participated in his funeral and burial at Old Chapel Hill cemetery in 1993.

Why I’m Supporting Coleman
Last year, as a member of the Roberson Place Neighborhood Association Through-Road Committee, I had an opportunity to meet and work with Alderman Dan Coleman. What struck me immediately about Dan was his true desire and willingness to listen to our neighborhood’s concerns and his in-depth understanding of the historical, financial and technical issues at play.

Here are some stories
I read where you’d like some letters to the editor on some stories:

  • You pick up Valarie Schwartz. She writes one of the most enjoyable pieces she has written in the 10 years that I remember her writing.
  • You inform me that my daughters’ new principal, Nathan Hester, speaks French… expect a little parlez-vous-avec-lui in Nathan’s future.
  • Ruth Solomon Wright’s obituary is a lovely story. Refreshingly exempt of her mundane accomplishments. What’s really important:
  • “… Wright has a love for her family and friends. She loved to provide for them by cooking many special recipes and always sending something home with each one.” Wonderful!
  • George “Cat Baby” Cannada: Heavens bless Jock Lauterer for this vivid description of a Carrboro character. I feel like I knew the “cat” personally. This may be the nudge that gets me to show up for a high school football game.

So what’s not a story? Keep up the fine work, Carrboro Citizen.

Letter from the editor: Tell us a story

By Kirk Ross

First off, thanks again for reading, writing, suggesting, advertising and supporting our advertisers. We’re still on the grow and still fine-tuning this wondrous new vehicle.

As we look toward fall, there are a few plans we want to share with you, mainly because our readers will play a key role in helping them unfold.

The first is an effort to gather stories, something any newspaper worth its salt should be doing on a daily basis.
