Cookbook author and radio personality Lynne Rossetto Kasper will visit the Fearrington Barn on Thursday, April 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. to read from her book The Splendid Table’s How To Eat Supper.
She hosts the radio show The Splendid Table and writes a column called Ask the Splendid Table for newspapers. Her third, and latest, book features simple and complex recipes and cooking advice. The 3CUPS coffee shop will host a forum on Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss gaps in local agriculture infrastructure. Leading the discussion are Tim Philpott, food editor for the environmental website Grist and founder of Maverick Farms, and Jennifer Curtis, project director for NC Choices, which promotes sustainable local farming. The discussion will focus on continuing to expand local agriculture. The event is free.

As if you needed further proof, witness firsthand this Saturday.

But of course you already knew. You knew that an absolutely essential ingredient in the very finest dishes from all our favorite chefs is that locally grown goodness – such as is found nowhere in greater abundance than at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market. Come, then, for the food, this Saturday morning, September 8, to the sixth-annual Chefs Who Shop the Carrboro Farmers’ Market event. Six chefs who regularly stock their kitchens with all the market has to offer will be on hand creating Southern fare-inspired dishes using ingredients presently available from market vendors.

Food at Really Really Free Market a bone of contention

With one participant reportedly saying, “There are people here who need to eat,” a variety of foods were distributed at last Saturday’s Really Really Free Market, held the first Saturday of each month on the Carrboro Town Commons.

The rub, from the town’s perspective, is that participants in the Really Really Free Market aren’t insured to distribute food at the event and therefore have been in violation of the event’s contract with the town.

But at least a few among those who bring goods to the gathering for free distribution say the town is wrong – that they are no different than anyone who may bring food to a public park and then share it, and that signs posted informing those who partake that the town can’t be held liable in case of sickness sufficiently cover all concerned.

Tomato tasting this weekend

The Carrboro Farmers’ Market will hold its annual tomato tasting on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Carrboro Town Commons.

Participants will be able to sample more than 60 types of tomatoes, from conventional to heirloom varieties, all grown within a 50-mile radius of the market. In addition, master gardeners will offer tomato-growing tips and tomato recipes will be available.

After sampling tomatoes, participants will be able to vote for their favorite varieties, and the winners will be announced next week.
