Uncommon impressions

Entering The Uncommon Garden is like stepping into another world. Reality vanishes, and a magical, serene jungle takes its place.

You won’t want to leave.

The air is cool, and running water can be heard from all directions. Dead trees are transformed into sculptures, and Japanese maples grow at angles among cedars, ferns, pools, and rocks. The real magic is in the detail, in the parts you wont notice the first time you look. Dragons, snakes, and other creatures emerge from the plants. A nook in the wall houses stones from all over the world. Every rock is a work of art, and every detail holds a whimsical surprise.

After writing a story yesterday about Scott Adams’ quest to run across North Carolina, I hardly slept last night. Phantom aches in my lower torso kept waking me up, making me wonder if I shouldn’t be encouraging him in my writing to just run as far as Chapel Hill and the arms of his loving wife and son and call it a day, then spend the next year raising money and awareness about cancer before finishing the run to the coast.

It’s already been a year since the Chapel Hill Senior Center on Elliott Road closed and the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center opened on Homestead Road. Not only did it move, the name has stuck — the seniors who use it have dropped “senior” from their vernacular when they refer to their center — it’s the Seymour Center (period).

The folks who delight in the activities there have planned several celebrations to honor the occasion, including the MayTime Merriment Gala Friday and Saturday.

Dog Man, by Martha Sherrill 256 pages; Penguin Group
Dog Man, by Martha Sherrill 256 pages; Penguin Group
Our good old dog Corncake died a year and a half ago. Corncake had been, to put it politely, of a mixed variety. That was fine with us. We loved her and mourned her passing. After a while, we began to hanker for a dog again. One day I got a call at work from my mother. There was a man with a box of puppies in front of Weaver Street Market; my 11-year-old daughter had fallen in love; should they bring a puppy home? I said yes and it’s a good thing I did, for later Charlotte confided the following: “When I saw another kid pick up the puppy I wanted, I felt faint.”
