Vicky and Robert Dickson of Carrboro are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan DeVane Dickson, to Jamie Tyler DeGraw, son of Herk and Joanna DeGraw of Greensboro. Susie is a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a staff writer for The Carrboro Citizen. Jamie is a graduate of the Greensboro Day School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is pursuing a master’s degree in health care administration at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC. The wedding is planned for June 13, 2009, on Bald Head Island.

Maggie Dickson and Eric Roehrig were married at noon on Saturday, July 26, 2008 in the courtyard of The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill before many family members and friends. Justin Faerber officiated, with music provided by Matt Kalb. A reception hosted by Maggie’s parents followed in the Old Well Room of The Carolina Inn.

Downtown Chapel Hill will host Locally Grown, an event celebrating downtown Chapel Hill and Orange County, on Fridays July 25 and Aug. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. Downtown visitors can support local business, eat local food and hear local music.

Live music will rock down on the east side from 7 to 10:30 on top of the Wallace Parking Deck at 150 East Rosemary St. Performing on July 25 are Joe Romeo & the Orange County Volunteers and Joceifus Rifle, with Today is Friday opening.

Chatham Mills will be buzzing with activity on Saturday. The Chatham County Beekeeper’s Association will celebrate National Pollinator Week with beekeeping demonstrations and lectures for kids and adults from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chatham County beekeepers will teach about the processes behind local honey. Kids can take part in a scavenger hunt and learn about pollination. A “pollinator-friendly” local lunch will be served. The event will take place on the lawn at Chatham Mills. Hillsborough Hog Day celebrated its 26th year this past Saturday the same way it has every year in the past, with tons of barbecue, entertainment and fun for all ages.

But for the first time, this year’s festival was a “trash-free” one, with efforts to minimize waste and recycle or compost as much as possible. Vendors used biodegradable utensils made from vegetable starch, and volunteers separated recyclables, paper waste and food from trash.

Fresh on the heels of winning kudos Tuesday night from the Town of Carrboro for community gardening, the Orange County Partnership for Young Children plans a celebration of its Healthy Kids Campaign Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at Carrboro Elementary School. The campaign has set up two gardens in Carrboro — one at the school and another at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park — and is looking for a third, possibly in conjunction with a local church.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael L. Norwood of Chapel Hill announce the engagement of their daughter Amy to Donald Irwin Roush of Raleigh, son of Donald and Marilyn Roush of Chapel Hill.

The bride-elect is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School, a graduate of UNC-Wilmington with a B.A. degree in elementary education and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.S. degree in nursing. She is employed by the N.C. Children’s Hospital as a Newborn Critical Care nurse.

The 13th annual Carrboro Day will feature activities and events both new and old, focusing on a new theme this year: “Celebrating a Sustainable Community.”

Catherine DeVine, director of Carrboro Day, said that while the event will include new features and activities, much of the May 4 festival will be reminiscent of those of years past.

“That’s why we love it,” said DeVine. “It’s like an old movie – out of time.”

Elizabeth Willey Spalt and Andrew Edward Stuckey celebrated their wedding at Wrightsville Beach over the weekend of August 10th, 2007. Elizabeth is the daughter of Allen and Susan Willey Spalt of Carrboro. Andy is the son of Edward and Naomi R. Stuckey of Greensburg, Indiana.

They were married Friday evening before immediate family at the Spalt’s beach house.  The double-ring ceremony was written by Andy and Elizabeth and presided over by the Rev. Penelope Morningstar. A reception followed on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Sunspree, Wrightsville Beach, where music was provided by the band Schooner from Carrboro.

Chelcy Elizabeth Boyer and Frederic Daniel Stutzman were married on June 23, 2007, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone by the Reverend Cynthia Banks and the Reverend Father John Kirwin.

Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents hosted a dinner reception at the historic Apple Barn in Valle Crucis.

The bride is the daughter of Jeff and Mary Boyer of Creston. She received both her bachelor and master degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill and is the Outreach and Engagement Librarian at NCSU Libraries. The groom is the son of Fred and Anne Stutzman of Albany, New York. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, he is a doctoral candidate there in information science.
