The Donahue and Wolfers criticism has been strongly rebutted.

16 recent US studies, inclusive of their defenses, find a deterrent effect of the death penalty.

All the studies which have not found a deterrent effect of the death penalty have refused to say that it does not deter some. The studies finding for deterrence state such. Confusion arises when people think that a simple comparison of murder rates and executions, or the lack thereof, can tell the tale of deterrence. It cannot.

Both high and low murder rates are found within death penalty and non death penalty jurisdictions, be it Singapore, South Africa, Sweden or Japan, or the US states of Michigan and Delaware. Many factors are involved in such evaluations. Reason and common sense tell us that it would be remarkable to find that the most severe criminal sanction -- execution -- deterred none. No one is foolish enough to suggest that the potential for negative consequences does not deter the behavior of some. Therefore, regardless of jurisdiction, having the death penalty will always be an added deterrent to murders, over and above any lesser punishments.

My condolences to the family. I am from the island of Guam. Craig, his siblings and parents Peter and the late Lily Yarnell lived on Guam during the nineteen sixties to the nineteen seventies. They were my next door neighbors back then. I have lost contact with the Yarnell family and I wish to have the chance to connect with them again. One of the things I remember was that the family adopted two boys of asian descent and I recall the names as Danny and Frank. I understand the loss for the family and I have experienced the feeling as well. I hope this response is a blessing for the family and a chance to contact each other.

This is what you get when you advocate for bigger and bigger government-- draconian rules that are ridiculous.

Ann - Goodness, please spare us the name calling. I'm no "brown shirt" or extremist (guess what, I even eat meat) and neither are many others nationwide who see horrendous suffering every day when dogs are kept chained for their lives. And yes, perpetually dogs most certainly do grow neurotic and depressed, sometimes they go insane. I see it constantly and it is awful. Why are you so snarky? What's so defenseable and great about allowing people to stake a dog in the yard and to leave it there for 10 years to pace back and forth in the same patch of dirt or mud? I'm not saying dogs should not be chained for short periods or that some should not kept outside for their lives. Those are kind of separate issues.

"often growing ever more neurotic, depressed and dangerous as the months and years tick by. "

A "neurotic, depressed" dog? Where do you take such an animal for counseling? Will my healthcare insurance pay for it? Maybe we need national pet healthcare. Where is Hillary when I need her?

Unbelieveable. Only in Orange county can such a lame regressive tax pass. Get one more over on "the man", right?

Homeowners, take note, get out and vote it down. Gas will be $4 per gallon soon- Got Tax?

Common sense is being ignored as usual to "pitch" radical animal rightists agenda. A dog on a 60' overhead trolley line gets much more daily exercise than one on a leash possibly walked 15 minutes a day. Not all breeds are suited for being kept in house but need to be kept outdoors. Who died and left the would be animal brown shirts in charge of anyone else?

[...] A quick report: Superchunk is on now (3 p.m.). The town didn’t shut down and you can actually get in and out of the Town Commons. Voting goes on. I suspect there may be a run on ice cream downtown after this thing lets out. Gonna be a long weekend. [...]
