The monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery, a Tibetan refugee monastery in southern India, will be creating a special sand mandala, The Medicine Buddha, at Unity Center of Peace in Chapel Hill, 8800 Seawell School Road, June 11-16.
The word mandala means “world in harmony.†When finished, to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists, the colored sands are poured into a nearby stream. The deconstruction ceremony will be held at Unity Center of Peace and along nearby trails on June 16 at 2 p.m. The pillows the monks sit on while creating the mandala will be raffled off at 11 that morning, with all proceeds going to the refugee monks living in the monastery.
The event is free of charge. For more information on the tour, visit monkstourinfo.com
