A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer
There will be a lot of old scouters in town this weekend to help Chapel Hill Boy Scout Troop 39 celebrate its 100th anniversary. Alas, the 1k Word guy will be in China on a Fulbright teaching assignment, but I will be with the Scouts in spirit. So here’s my contribution to the festivities: the troop photo just prior to leaving for an August 1961 three-week canoe trip to the Haliburton Scout Reserve in Ontario, Canada. Gathered outside the fellowship hall of the sponsoring University United Methodist Church, the Otter, Eagle, Bison and Beaver patrols include, left to right, (to the best of my spotty memory): yr hmbl svt as Patrol Leader and newly minted Eagle Scout, along with Otter Patrol members Dave Harrison, Mark Burnette, Burton Craig and Alan Bream; then Eagle Patrol leader Eric Carriker (beanpole in the center) dwarfing little Spence Horn and Graham Burch; third from the center right is Billy Horn; there’s John Radford in the back of the seventh column; and Tito Craig front right. Forgive me; it’s only been 50 years. The photo was made for the Chapel Hill Weekly by freelance photographer Bill Sparrow.
