A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer
From the 1954 bound volume of Roland Giduz’ Chapel Hill News Leader comes this image of the Boys of Summer 57 years ago. After shooting the photograph with his 4×5 Speed Graphic camera, Roland wrote this caption: “Members of the newly organized Chapel Hill Junior High baseball team, shown above in their fresh-monogrammed CHJH uniform T-shirts are, kneeling, left to right: Charles Hubbard Jr., Randy Blackwell, Bobby Madry, Benjy Potter and Jimmy Jamerson; second row: Charlie Shaffer, Mike Culbreth, Joe Burket, Jack Burket and Ronnie Vick. Back row: Monte Milner, Mark Perry, Baldy Williams, Paul Houston, Co-captain Ruffin Harville, Co-captain George Shepard and Coach Gordon Blackwell.†Roland reports that the team had just played the Carrboro Elementary School squad, and doesn’t say where – but it had to be at the present day Carrboro Town Commons (site of the present day Carrboro Farmers’ Market) or the red-clay field located behind the old Chapel Hill Elementary and High School on Franklin Street, which is now Granville Towers. And notice the honest-to-goodness wooden bats.
