It is time again for the Carrboro Film Festival to call for submissions from the filmmakers fortunate enough to pass through Orange County. There is a $15 fee for submissions and the deadline is August 29. The late deadline is September 22 and late submissions are charged a $30 fee. The filmmaker must have been in Orange County at least once and the films must be shorter than 20 minutes. The festival will be held Nov. 23 at the Carrboro Century Center. Hay muchas oportunidades para disfrutar de la naturaleza cerca de donde uno vive. Por ejemplo, hay el parque Wilson en Carrboro que contiene canchas para el tenis y aceso a caminatas por el riachuelo Bolin. Meanwhile, music starts at 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall with the Village Band. Following that are performances that include The Bolin Creek Harmony Boys, the Cane Creek Cloggers and Great Big Gone. Bill Kirchen, formerly of Commander Cody and a Music Assocation Hall of Famer, will unleash his guitar from noon until 2:00. Events for kids and families last until 3:00 and include clowns, a magic show, a water balloon toss, a bounce house, an obstacle course and more.

Janet Francis Anderson, 82, died June 5, 2008 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Jack L. Anderson.
She was born November 16, 1925 in Wichita, KS and received her R.N. from the University of Kansas. She lived for many years in Wayzata, Minnesota where her husband practiced dentistry. Upon retirement they moved to Hot Springs Village, AR and eventually re-located to Sumter, SC residing at Covenant Place. Mrs. Anderson had recently moved to Chapel Hill to be closer to family.

Mrs. Barbara Marie Campbell Hardee, 70, of U.S. Highway 15-501 South, Chapel Hill died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at UNC Hospitals after a long illness.
Mrs. Hardee was born in Caswell County, NC, but moved to Chapel Hill in 1956. She was employed at the Bank of America at Glenn Lennox for 21 years before retiring. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Carrboro.

Her love of life and people, and her warm and generous spirit will guide us all in our time here on earth.
Britt is survived by her parents, Nellie and Fred Hauchman, her brother, Rick and grandparents, Pedro and Nelia Diaz, and many wonderful family and friends.

The Orange County Arts Commission and Carrboro Recreation and Parks will present the film Pumping Iron, a documentary of the life of Arnold Schwartzenegger, on Saturday at the Carrboro Century Center as the 2008 American Summer Movie.
The film depicts how young Schwartzenegger focused his mind, built up his body and became a politician, and contains new footage in which he admits taking steroids and telling lies so he could buy a new car.

UNC’s Center for the Study of the American South and the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History will sponsor a program on the influence of African musical traditions on fiddle and banjo music in the southeastern United States at the Stone Center today (Thursday) from 4 to 6 p.m.
Cece Conway, a folklore professor at Appalachian State University, will trace origins of the gourd banjo. West African musician Cheick Hamala Diabaté and singer and old-time fiddler James Leva will provide the music. Diabaté will play the n’goni, a Malian stringed instrument and Leva will fiddle.

Piedmont Health Services received the Compassionate Friends Award on Tuesday at their Lloyd Street offices in Carrboro.
Deborah England, an employee of Piedmont Health Services, nominated her employer because of the support she received after the death of her son. Piedmont Health Services was recognized for going above and beyond customary workplace policies and practices in meeting the needs of a grieving employee.

The Carrboro Cybrary is asking patrons to vote for their favorite books in preparation for the general election in November.
Readers are invited to vote for their favorite fiction, non-fiction and political books of the 21st century, as well as their favorite books of all time. The Cybrary will choose two of the winners to add to their highly selective permanent collection. Each voter will receive an “I Vote for Books” sticker and the chance to win a book by Barack Obama and one by John McCain. Patrons can vote for books at the Carrboro Cybrary at 100 N. Greensboro St. until August 16.

I was in the Triad the other day visiting with some fellow media types including blogger Jon Lowder, who related an incident he’d happened upon while returning from a recent visit to Pittsboro.
Lowder encountered a traffic stop on N.C. 87 just inside the Alamance County line. After watching the sheriff deputies and highway patrol checking licenses and looking over the cars, Lowder said it was apparent that the law was interested in vehicles with Hispanic occupants and not much interested in anyone else.
