School board to meet on grading system, policy changes

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education meets tonight (Thursday) at 7 at the Chapel Hill Town Hall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

The board will consider in a work session a proposed change to student grading that would emphasize consistency and add a floor of 61 to the numeric grading scale. Opponents of the proposed policy change argue that a minimum grade of 61 inflates grades and lowers standards.

Other items on the agenda include:

• Policy changes regarding the special education program/rights of students with disabilities;

• Policy changes regarding disciplinary action for exceptional children/students with disabilities;

• Meal price increases;

• Policy changes regarding discrimination, harassment and bullying;

• Graduation requirements; and

• Site selection for the district’s 11th elementary school.
