This weekend, the Town Commons will be packed with activity, kicking off with a concert sponsored by the Barack Obama presidential campaign on Friday afternoon and closing with the 13th annual Carrboro Day on Sunday.

The “Change Rocks” concert, featuring Arcade Fire and Superchunk, is intended to encourage one-stop early voting and is conveniently located next to Carrboro Town Hall, an early-voting site.

The Obama campaign distributed about 4,000 free concert tickets throughout the Triangle. According to Anita Jones-McNair, director of Carrboro Recreation and Parks, individuals will be required to present a ticket to enter the commons, which will be roped off for the event.

Space is limited and admission will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Gates will open at 1 p.m. and the concert will start at 2 p.m. Parking is extremely limited.

“We are strongly recommending that people either walk or bicycle, or even take public transportation to the site,” Jones-McNair said.

Given that the concert will occur during business hours, Jones-McNair said staff will position the stage to minimize noise disturbance. According to Captain J.G. Booker of the Carrboro Police Department, extra officers will be on duty to ensure that everything runs smoothly throughout the concert and rally.

30th Anniversary Farmers’ Market

The Carrboro Farmers’ Market will celebrate its 30th season on Saturday during regular market hours, 7 a.m. to noon, at the Town Commons.

Throughout the market, buyers will be able to fill out an anniversary drawing entry form each time they make a purchase. Prizes, which have been donated by local businesses, include gift certificates to Lantern, Crook’s Corner, Acme, Moshi Moshi and more.

In addition, local bakers will provide an “Anniversary Taste Treat” in the gazebo. Thirtieth anniversary t-shirts and information also will be available in the gazebo.

Local musicians will provide entertainment.

Carrboro Day

On Sunday, Carrboro will be bustling with the various events of the 13th annual Carrboro Day. This year’s theme, “Celebrating a Sustainable Community,” will be apparent throughout the event: For the first time, Carrboro Day will be trash-free.

As with other weekend events, participants are encouraged to walk or bike to downtown, as parking will be limited.

Events include all-day musical performances, a poetry roundtable and much more. Story Sharing, a new Carrboro Day event, will feature a collection of photos, slides and audiocassettes documenting Carrboro’s history.

  1. […] A quick report: Superchunk is on now (3 p.m.). The town didn’t shut down and you can actually get in and out of the Town Commons. Voting goes on. I suspect there may be a run on ice cream downtown after this thing lets out. Gonna be a long weekend. […]
