Wilson Library’s newest exhibit examines the beginning and growth of American counterculture poetry in post-World War II twentieth century in The Beats and Beyond: Counterculture Poetry, 1950-1975 in the Rare Book Collection of UNC’s Wilson Library.

The exhibit includes about 100 publications, drawings, photos and handwritten items associated with writers from groups such as the Black Mountain poets, the Beats, the San Francisco Renaissance and the New York School of Poets. The exhibit will also examine the literary counterculture’s engagement with such issues as censorship, feminism, Black nationalism and the Vietnam War.

Poets include Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Diane di Prima, Michael McClure, Frank O’Hara and Amiri Baraka.

A panel discussion will take place Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at Wilson Library. The discussion is free and open to the public. For information, call 962-4207.
