Third-grade students at Seawell Elementary recently participated in a residency designed to explore curriculum through drama and poetry, while simultaneously preparing them to see the play Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart by Mike Wiley at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro.
The ABLE (Arts-Based Learning Experiences) residency, hosted by the ArtsCenter with funding from The Grable Foundation, consisted of five class sessions with teaching artist Virginia Queen.

Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College will host open houses on March 7 and 14, from 3 to 5 p.m.
The program offers honors-level high school courses on a community college campus.
The open houses will be held in Room 45 of the White Buidling at 1637 Lawson St. in Durham. Refreshments will be served.

Carrboro High School’s traveling production of Seussical the Musical will open the weekend of March 15.
Performances will be held at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 15 and at 3 p.m. on March 16.
Tickets are $5 for students under 18 and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door or reserved by contacting Brooke Linefsy at 918-2200, ext. 25312, or blinefsky@chccs.k12.nc.us.

Registration is underway for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Summer Camp and Summer Youth Enrichment programs.
Summer Camp is a full-day program for students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Activities include swimming, crafts, music, cooking and weekly field trips. One-week sessions run June 23 to August 1 at Carrboro, Estes Hills and Glenwood elementary schools. Tuition is $150 per week plus a one-time $35 registration fee.

The Carrboro High School men’s lacrosse team brought its record to 1-1 with a 9-5 win over Orange High on Friday night at home. Coaches Pete Procopio, Kelsey Kihlstrom and Paul Bonnici juggled their young line-up and taught on the fly as the Jaguars went ahead early and never trailed in a hard-fought game. The scoring was led by MacKenzie Price with four and John Pamplin with three, and Rich Leeper provided three assists. The defense was anchored by strong performances in the goal. Nick Swartzwelder had eight saves, while Gus Brighton stopped five shots.

The Carrboro Recreation and Parks 2007-08 Pee Wee Basketball regular season is over.
In the West Division, the Sonics clinched the title with a record of 8-1. They’re followed by the Pacers, 7-2, the Spurs, 3-6, the Rockets, 2-7, and the Hornets who went 0-9.

If we knew we could improve education by buying every learner a laptop, many communities might be so inclined. But it doesn’t appear that this would make a significant difference in student outcomes. We take it for granted that kids with computers at school are better off than those without, but most major longitudinal studies of the effectiveness of technology on student learning have been inconclusive. Why?
Virtually every adult working in school has a computer nowadays. And most are well versed in the basic operation of email, calendars and office software suites. But the benefits of such widespread adoption have yet to translate into better teaching or improved school leadership. Why?

Freelance web designer Brian Russell’s vision to create a shared workplace for freelancers and other creative types is moving toward a concrete Carrboro reality.
The idea to open what he called a shared office space with a coffee shop atmosphere was first mentioned publicly nearly a year ago. Russell said James Harris, director of economic and community development in Carrboro, encouraged him to make it happen.

Carrboro’s Erica Eisdorfer has long been known in book circles around here and not just because she’s managed the Bullshead Book Shop on campus for so many years.
Her name got a little wider circulation this week after Amazon.com named her new work, The Wet Nurse’s Tale, one of the top ten finalists in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest.
