Candlelight vigil for Eve Carson

Tonight there’ll be a candlelight vigil for student body president and UNC trustee Eve Carson, who was shot and killed early Tuesday morning.

Yesterday morning at approximately 5:00 am, Chapel Hill Police responded to reported gunshots in the area of Davie Circle. Officers checked the area and located an unidentified female 18-25 years of age lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Hillcrest Circle.

This morning at approximately 9:00 am a positive identification of the victim was made by police investigators and the office of the medical examiner. The victim has been identified as Eve Carson age 22, a UNC senior and current UNC student body president. Eve was a resident of Chapel Hill and a highly regarded member of the university community. Franklin McCain accomplished a great feat on Friday at Rashkis Elementary School – he held the attention of 250 fourth- and fifth-graders for more than an hour.

McCain, one of the “Greensboro Four” who participated in the 1960 Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-in, recounted his experiences for Rashkis students, including his grandson, kindergartener Davis McCain.

Mental health collapse leaves network in shambles

“I’ve come to the conclusion,” says Karen Dunn, director of Club Nova, a Carrboro clubhouse that helps people with mental illnesses lead productive lives in the community, “that there must be a new diagnosis that hasn’t yet ended up in the DSM” – by which she refers to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

“It’s some kind of delusional disorder on a bureaucratic level.”

Timing being everything, the folks down in Bynum have hit the bull’s eye with a recent fundraising plan.

Everybody, it seems, needs rain barrels these days.

Luke Barrow, who, with his wife, Bonnie, has lived in three houses in Bynum over the past eight years, found a place in Idaho selling food containers that had been up-fitted into rain barrels. The more one orders, the less they cost, so he started talking to his neighbors about going in with him on an order.

News Brief: Major corridors task force

The Chatham County Major Corridors Task Force will hold community meetings to present a commercial-development proposal affecting seven major roadways.

The roadways are US 1, US 15-501, US 64, US 421, NC 87, NC 751 and Pittsboro-Moncure Road. The plan affects the portions of the roads outside of Siler City and Pittsboro’s jurisdictions.
The community meetings will provide residents and businesses with more information about the proposal and allow them to ask questions or make suggestions regarding the plan.

News Brief: War walkout

The UNC March 19 Coalition Against the War, a group of about a dozen student organizations, is organizing a walkout, march and rally at 12:30 p.m. on March 19 to mark the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and demonstrate support for an end to the occupation. The march is part of a larger protest movement with groups from more than 60 other universities having pledged participation.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the superintendent’s recommended budget for 2008-09 tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Town Hall.

The public hearing will precede the board’s regularly scheduled meeting.

News Brief: Police seek victim ID

The Chapel Hill Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying the victim of a shooting early Wednesday morning near Hillcrest Drive.

Chapel Hill Police responded to a report of gunshots in the area of Davie Circle around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Officers located an unidentified deceased female lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Hillcrest Circle. She is described as white, 18-25 years old, five feet five to five feet six inches tall, 120 pounds, with blonde hair. She was wearing a navy blue short-sleeved shirt with a red circle and white symbol in the center; a gold, in color, necklace with a locket; gray sweat pants; and blue, gray and white Converse tennis shoes.

Heavy rain pelted the windows of Town Hall Tuesday night as Ed Kerwin, executive director of Orange Water and Sewer Authority, delivered his monthly briefing on the drought for the Carrboro Board of Aldermen.

Clearly delighted, he told them he’d drop by anytime if they could guarantee rain like that.

Obituary - Margaret McCaull Carmichael Lester

Margaret McCaull Carmichael Lester, 83, died unexpectedly but with dignity at her home in Chapel Hill on March 3, 2008. She was a graceful and vibrant woman to the end, and was a positive force in the lives of many people.

Movies, books and Latin jazz were among Margaret’s primary passions and she was a member of several movie and book groups. An avid gardener and bird-watcher, she also loved dogs and cats and was a frequent contributor to wildlife charities. Margaret was a dedicated Democrat, serving as the South Orange precinct chairman for many years, and as a campaign volunteer for several local, state and national candidates. She was an active civil rights advocate, promoting a variety of social justice causes.
