School Brief: New kindergartners

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is now accepting registrations for kindergarten students for fall 2008.
Incoming kindergartners must turn five years old on or before October 16. All students entering kindergarten in the fall must have a physical exam prior to the first day of school. A physical exam any time during the year preceding the first day of school is acceptable.

Where does one start, with so much happening in this quickly dwindling UNC and ACC basketball season? Any other year, the spectacle of Carolina’s relentless forward Tyler Hansbrough waving as he passes so many legendary names in the basketball record books would be the story of the season. A week ago Hansbrough was leaving Bobby Jones, Mike O’Koren and Walter Davis in his rear view; now he’s 20 points behind Antawn Jamison’s career scoring number. And the way Tyler’s been scoring lately, he could pass Antawn in the first half this Saturday against Boston College! But Hansbrough will be the first to remind anyone that it’s all about winning, above any of that, so we must move on.

I was deeply moved by the performance this past Friday, and grateful that so many were willing to share their stories. Some of the stories were almost unbearably sad — stories of prejudice and fear, of meanness and ignorance. Some of the stories were beautiful — stories of family and tight-knit community, of providing for each other’s needs, of inter-generational relationships. Some things I learned were alarming; I never understood so clearly until watching the performance how damaging integration policies were to the Northside community. More »
