Elections Brief: Halkiotis running for school board

Steven Halkiotis, a retired assistant superintendent with Orange County Schools who served five terms on the Orange County Board of Commissioners, has filed to run for Orange County Schools Board of Education.

Halkiotis, who opted not to run for re-election as commissioner in 2006, recently retired from Orange County Schools, where he was the district’s director of auxiliary services.

Mary Talbot Korray, 86, died at her residence on Saturday, January 26, 2007. Mrs. Korray was a homemaker. She is survived by her three children: Kathleen Sherman and spouse, James of Chapel Hill; Bruce Korray and wife, Deborah of Miami , FL; and son, James Korray of FL, and their families. She was predeceased by husband, Julian M. Korray.

Dorothy Phelps Vroome , 86, died Friday, January 25, 2008 at Springmoor Retirement Community. She was born on July 27, 1921 in Riverdale, NY to Albert and Mildred Phelps.

Mrs. Vroome is survived by three children: sons, Roy Vroome of Charlotte and Richard P. Vroome of Snowflake, AZ; daughter, Virginia Stelle of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Ann Paul of Bedford Hills, NY, James Beattie of San Jose CA, Elizabeth Benson of Raleigh, NC, Darren Stelle of Leesburg, VA, Caroline Setliff of Raleigh NC, Kevin Vroome of Raleigh NC, Christine Hartsfield of Wilmington, NC; and twelve great grandchildren. She was predeceased by daughter, Joan Vroome Beattie in 1981, grandson, William Beattie in 2001, and husband, Ray in 2004 after 60 years of marriage.

Obituary - Wiley H. Shearin

Wiley H. Shearin, Ed.D., 70, of Chapel Hill died sadly on February 5, 2008, at UNC Hospitals.

Born in Rocky Mount on May 23, 1937, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany, received a Bachelor of Science degree, Master’s degree, and Doctorate in Education at UNC-Chapel Hill.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Shearin Hounshell, R.N. and her husband David W. Hounshell, of Raleigh; daughter Dr. Mary D. Shearin, of Greensboro; former wife, the author Erika V. Shearin Karres, Ed.D. and her husband Andrew M.. Karres, of Chapel Hill; granddaughters Katherine Elizabeth Hounshell and Sarah Emily Hounshell, of Raleigh; and a host of other relatives in the U.S. and Germany.

Obituary - Mary M. Norwood-Jones

Mary M. Norwood-Jones was born in Durham on May 9, 1933 to the late Nora M. Norwood. She attended Orange County Training School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951.

She was a member of First Baptist Church. At the age of twelve, she joined Rock Hill Baptist Church.

After graduating from Lincoln High School, she attended North Carolina College at Durham for Negroes, which is now N.C. Central University.

School Brief: Energy physics show

The UNC Department of physics and astronomy will hold the 8th Annual Physics Demo Show, “Energy All Around Us!” on March 1 at 2 p.m.

The show will address questions such as: Why do we need energy? Where can we find energy? How can we conserve energy? Physics professors and graduate students will perform fun physics demonstrations.

School Brief: Battle of the Books

The 2008 Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Battle of the Books will be held March 7 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Culbreth Middle School auditorium.

The district’s four middle schools will compete for the right to represent the district at the Piedmont Regional competition later this spring.

Battle of the Books is an exciting showcase of the reading talents of Chapel Hill-Carrboro students.

Four students from the Chapel Hill High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America placed in the recent Triad Regional competition held at Eastern Randolph High School in Ramseur.

School Brief: Night of One-Acts

Students in the Chapel Hill High School Theater Arts program will present “A Night of One-Acts” on February 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Hanes Theater at Chapel Hill High.

Students will perform Kurt Vonnegut’s The Lie, directed by Zoe Symon; Kismet and a Bell, written by Juliana Brecher and directed by Olivia Grinston; a scene from Serenading Louie, by Lanford Wilson; and Four Yorkshiremen, from Monty Python.

Tickets are $3.

Carrboro High School chorus and orchestra parents will co-sponsor a toy sale with Carrboro Elementary School on Saturday at Carrboro Elementary from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The schools need toy donations for the sale. Donations may be made at the Carrboro High front desk by Friday or at Carrboro Elementary. Soft, cuddly toys will not be accepted.

Sports Brief: College sports seminar

The East Chapel Hill High School Booster Club will host a seminar for district parents and high school students who are considering playing a sport in college on March 3 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The program will feature the personal experiences of a parent, student-athlete and a coach/administrator. Presenters will discuss recruiting and the college athletic experience.

The seminar will be held in the East Chapel Hill High School Media Center. For more information, contact John Austin at john.austin@emergent.net.
