Frances G. Hatfield, age 90, passed away on December 28, 2007 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Beloved wife of the late Truman Hatfield Jr., Mrs. Hatfield was born on January 17, 1917 in Glenwood, Illinois.  She lived in Glenwood, South Holland and Lansing, Illinois, except for the last year of her life when she lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Ann Gregory Turner, 51, of  1660 MLK, JR. BLVD, Chapel Hill died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at UNC Hospital.
Surviving is her husband: Robert Lee Strowd, III ; brother: David C. Turner.

Graveside service will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday, January 5, 2008 in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Walker’s Funeral Home, Chapel Hill.

Eunice E. Hagy, 82, of Durham died at her residence on Thursday, December 27, 2007.  A loving mother and homemaker, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years  Harold J. Hagy, and her son Lloyd Alan “Biff” Hagy .

Mrs. Hagy is survived by her daughters,  Linda Boothe of Raleigh and Carolyn Hagy of Durham; brother,  Frank Piner and sister, Sentral Gravely, both of Hopewell VA.

Private memorial services will be held.

Farmers’ market gets new manager

The Carrboro Farmers’ Market, like the calendar year, is changing. This year the market opens all year ‘round, starting Saturday at 9 a.m. And market manager Sheila Neal is stepping down, yielding her position to not-quite newcomer Sarah Blacklin.

Blacklin took up the job on Wednesday and is still settling into the position, but she already has a lot of experience at the market.

“I took the aspect of being a grower and also a vendor, and I’ve also had experience as a manager and as a buyer. I feel it’s really important to understand all aspects of the Farmers’ Market.”

Land & Table Brief: Vegan potluck

Vegan potluck dinners are held the third Saturday of each month (the next is January 19) at the Common House in the Solterra Co-housing Community. The address is 98 Solterra Lane in Durham. Attendees should bring a vegan dish containing no animal derived ingredients, not even whey or casein, to serve four times the number in their party and the recipe. Table setting is provided and assistance with cleaning is appreciated.

The General Store Café in Pittsboro will have live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights throughout the month of January. The shows include a range of style but particularly emphasize jazz, blues and bluegrass from local musicians. School reviews first semester

As Carrboro High School’s first semester draws to a close, administrators, teachers and students are taking a closer look at the school’s successes and at areas targeted for improvement.

Carrboro High students finished their semester exams before winter break and the first semester ends January 18. According to Principal Jeff Thomas, the semester has been a success — but not without a great deal of help from parents, teachers and students.

“We’ve had a lot of enthusiasm and support from our parents, and our teachers seem to be pretty enthusiastic,” Thomas said.

East Chapel Hill High School will conduct its annual tour and information session for private school students and their parents on January 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The school holds a tour for private school students because a large number of students in the area who attend private schools until eighth grade enter East Chapel Hill High School for ninth grade.

School Brief: Financial aid night planned

Orange County Schools will hold a Financial Aid Night on January 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Orange High School auditorium. Parents of students who are planning to apply for financial aid are encouraged to attend.

Representatives from the College Foundation of North Carolina, Elon University, N.C. State University and the Durham Technical Community College will serve on a discussion panel.
