The Cougar varsity boys survived a tenacious effort by Smith last night. It was a team effort that pulled Culbreth to victory, 43-36. Keenan van Name led the Cougars with 12 points and an overall great game at both ends of the court. Drew Davis came on strong in the second half with 7 points while Denzel Ingram shredded the Smith pressure with many assists and 11 points. Thaijsari Ruffin and Michael Thornton played well inside for the Cougars.

Higher ground
This county is no more awash in illegals than it was at another time “awash” in Italians, Irish and Germans. If it is awash in anything, it’s in racist and dangerous rhetoric contrary to the highest principles on which it was founded.
Occasionally, this column has joined the attempt to inject some simple sanity into the increasingly polarized debate over this country’s policies and attitudes about immigration. More »

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a dozen times, “It just doesn’t feel like Christmas,” with a segue into the favorite topic, our un-seasonably warm weather. True, it doesn’t feel like December, even for the South. But for me, this is the best Christmas present the weather gods could bestow upon us, other than, say, a couple inches of rain. Recently, a number of North Carolina mayors came together to call for the state Senate to address the gang problems facing the state. The group complained that the General Assembly has not effectively handled the problem and said they will work to see the so-called “Street Gang Prevention Act” (a bill passed by the House of Representatives last July that would have created a number of new criminal offenses, upped numerous penalties and promised to swell the state’s prison population) pass the Senate next year. There is nothing wrong with wanting legislators to address a problem causing a great deal of concern, but adequately handling this situation takes careful consideration. More »

Immigration flip-flop
I noted that in last week’s Citizen, Sen. Ellie Kinnaird singled out Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as saying, “We’re a better country than to punish children for what their parents did.
We’re a better country than that.” However, by the time the Citizen went to press, Huckabee had changed his mind on illegal immigration, and thus Kinnaird’s praise was already out of date. More »

From the intersection of Main and Greensboro, you’ll take the sidewalk along the east side and veer onto the ramp. Further down the sidewalk, there’ll also be a short flight of stairs to the porch and entryway.
That how to get to Neal’s Deli, due to open in “early 2008” — and judging from the buzz already going on around town, if you’re planning on heading there around lunchtime, expect some company. More »
