This was a deeply moving and motivating story. The sad thing is that the care of the mentally ill has taken a downward trend since Josh's illness developed. The people of North Carolina will have far fewer than the meager resouces offered to the mentally ill when Dorothea Dix Hospital closes. In spite of touting the new Central Regional Hospital, the fact is funding for the building and staff is sorely lacking. Patients will suffer.

I knew Josh. I once was standing near him when a friend of mine approached. I said to my friend, "This is Josh, Lee Smith's son," and Josh, with out animosity, but with a wry smile, said, "Among other things." He had a sense of self, a certain ease, a kind of awareness which many of us never attain.
