The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education will today (Thursday) consider a possible expansion to the district’s Spanish/English dual-language program.
The program, which was first offered in 2002 at Carrboro Elementary, has been very successful in terms of parent satisfaction and language skills. In addition, the district has received a high level of interest in the program, and school officials have recommended expanding the program to additional school sites for the 2008-09 school year.
The district also offers a Chinese/English dual-language program at Glenwood Elementary.

The steady pleas for water conservation seem to be having an effect, according to officials with the Orange Water and Sewer Authority. So much so that the areas served by the utility may not see the same kind of mandatory conservation requirements as other locales.
As of Wednesday, OWASA’s daily account of how full its lakes are showed that University Lake is 53 inches below full and Cane Creek Reservoir 45.5 inches below full — about 76.7 percent of their capacity.
Ed Holland, planning director for OWASA, says that should be enough to get through the rest of the peak-demand season.

Charleen Swansea phoned the other day to remind us that the annual summer documentary film series is spooling up its last set of reels. The American Summer series has shown some dandies this summer on the last Saturday of each month at the Century Center. The final two shorts promise more of the same and a grand finale for the festival as well.
So jot down August 25th at 7 p.m. and reserve the early evening for a seat in the climate-controlled comfort of the Century Center where the magic lantern will reveal Mark Twain’s America. The film includes a trip down the Mississippi during the tumultuous times in which Twain plied the waters aboard steamboats. And for local flavor, the series is sponsoring a talk by Carrboro filmmaker Cyndi Whisnant and a showing of Living Historians of the Battleship North Carolina, a splendid look at the life of re-enactors on board the historic old boat docked in Wilmington Harbor.
