The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service has fired an employee for allegedly stealing money from the agency’s crisis intervention fund.

The IFC, which runs the county’s homeless shelter, deposits about $150,000 into the crisis intervention fund each year. The fund helps people in crisis pay their rent and utility bills.

Chris Moran, director of the IFC, said the employee allegedly stole an undisclosed amount over a 29-month period. The employee, who he would not name, had worked at the IFC for a number of years and admitted taking the money.

“She knew all of our controls and knew how to bypass them,” he said, adding that the agency has taken steps to prevent thefts in the future. In addition, the agency has notified all of its donors, volunteers and employees.

Moran said the agency has handed over all of the information regarding the alleged embezzlement to Carrboro police, and he anticipates that charges will be brought against the former employee. He added that insurance will cover the losses that the agency can document.
