Six candidates have filed for election to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education.
Newcomers include Mia Day Burroughs, Mehar Safvi and Gary Wallach. Incumbents Jamezetta Bedford, Mike Kelley and Annetta Streater have filed for reelection. Board member Liz Carter has announced that she will not seek reelection.
Burroughs, 45, has two children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, at Phillips Middle School and East Chapel Hill High School. She has lived in Chapel Hill since 1995 and works as a freelance grant strategist. Burroughs has also served as chair of the Estes Hills Elementary School Governance Committee.
Safvi, 53, teaches at Neal Middle School in Durham Public Schools and has also worked in school administration. She has lived in Chapel Hill since 1998, and her two children graduated from Chapel Hill High School.
Wallach, 64, has a daughter at Frank Porter Graham Elementary and has been active at the school. During redistricting meetings this year, he dressed as a lion – the school’s mascot – at school board meetings. Wallach has served on the Chapel Hill Human Services Advisory Board.
Bedford, 48, serves as board chair and has been on the board since 2003. She is an accountant and has worked as a substitute teacher. Bedford has three children who attend or have attended Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools.
Kelley, 47, has served on the board since 2003. He has four children who have attended or attend Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools and has lived in Chapel Hill since 1998. Kelley is a physician scientist at Duke University and the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
Streater, 43, was appointed to the board in June 2006 to fill Ed Sechrest’s seat. She has a son who attends Culbreth Middle School and a one-year-old daughter. Streater lives in Chapel Hill and works as a dental hygienist.
Elected board members serve a four-year term. The filing period will close at noon on Friday.
