McCarthy fails physical, Chapel Hill looking again

Tom McCarthy, Chapel Hill’s newly appointed police chief, will not be able to take over the duties of the job due to health issues,  town officials announced late Wednesday.

“As you know, I have worked hard to keep myself in shape and be ready for this great opportunity. I am very disappointed that I was unable to meet the standard (of the physical exam required by North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards).

However, I believe it is most important that I follow my doctor’s advice and address my health issues of hypertension. If I can ever be of assistance to you or the department, please let me know. I wish you and the Town the very best,” McCarthy said in a statement released Wednesday night.

McCarthy, the former police chief of Fayetteville,  has a history of heart problems.
Town Manager Roger Stancil  said  he was assessing options and would advise the Town Council of what option might be available.

The town reviewed more than 50 applicants before selecting McCarthy.
Major Brian Curran will continue to serve as the Interim Police Chief.
McCarthy was to be sworn in on Wednesday.
