Every year my parents would load us into the car for a drive back to their home town to help grandmothers go around to the various cemetaries, placing flowers on family graves and telling us stories in the expectation that we would pass those stories along to our children. My grandparents are all gone now, along with my mom. But my father and sister continue the tradition. Like John, I regret the invasion of politics into a day of remembrance. That regret has nothing to do with my feelings on the war, just a longing for a simpler time where family stories connected us to past generations. Again, I am not against what they do, simply the day they chose to do it. On a side note, I did not write a letter to the editor. They chose to publish a quick comment I made on the online site. I personally think there is a big difference in the two. If I were to write a letter to the editor I would put much more thought and feeling into it and I probably would have done more research. I choose to express one bit of outrage that's been bugging me of late. Here is another bit. I am so sick of those who would say that being anti-war is anti-solider. As Mayor Chilton wrote above Misael Martinez’s mother asked for the resolution calling for an end to the war. I don't think anyone who wants soldiers to come home and be safe are against them. Mothers of solders or Raging Grannies. What part of "The Ragin’ Grannies are way out of line here." is not against what they do? I would think trying to stop more soldiers from being fallen soldiers would be the most admirable thing to do on a day set to remember all those that have died and those that will still die within the near future. (I live in Chapel Hill) The next week an angry Durhamite wrote complaining that they didn't need someone from Chapel Hill telling them how Durham should be. Well... I take this opportunity to respectfully tell you the same thing Mr. Avery. Many of us live in Chapel Hill and Carrboro because we AGREE with what the Raging Grannies say. I LOVE Durham and respect all those that live there. But please but out! We really don't care what the rest of NC has to say about our liberal ideas!
