The Chatham County Board of Commissioners voted on Monday to impose a temporary moratorium on certain types of residential development in Chatham County.
The moratorium will last no longer than one year and applies to any new residential subdivisions with more than 25 lots or units. The moratorium will not affect commercial developments in the county. In addition, the moratorium will not apply to any developments in Pittsboro, Siler City and Cary, because those towns have their own land-use jurisdictions.
Development applications received by the Chatham County Planning Department as of May 8 will be held until the moratorium has been lifted by the commissioners.
The moratorium ordinance noted that 12,000 new residential lots or homes have been approved in the county and its municipalities over the past four years.
