Got some thoughts you’d like to share on the shape of Carolina North? Here’s your opportunity.

This Monday, June 4, at 7 p.m., the grassroots citizens group Neighborhoods for Responsible Growth will be hosting a community forum at the Chapel Hill Town Hall.

This will be an opportunity for citizens to learn of the most recent developments in the planning for UNC’s proposed research campus to be sited on the Horace Williams tract and to discuss its potential impacts.

Neighborhoods for Responsible Growth’s objectives for the forum are “to build a broad local consensus on specific action plans for obtaining formal commitments from UNC regarding various aspects of the development.” These include preservation of open space, onsite housing, transportation considerations, school capacity and the impacts on natural resources.

A panel will consist of Carrboro Alderman Dan Coleman, Chapel Hill Town Council member Bill Strom. James Carnahan of the Village Project, Bernadette Pelissier of the Sierra Club and Mike Collins and Julie McClintock of Neighborhoods for Responsible Growth. Following short presentations from panel members, the floor will be opened for discussion.

This week, UNC officials showed two plans for Carolina North as part of its series of community discussions on the proposal. One plan concentrates development along a corridor running parallel with Martin Luther King, Jr. The other would concentrate development in an area around the existing runway of Horace Williams airport.

The university has said it hopes to have a plan submitted to the Town of Chapel Hill for review by October.
